THOMAS LAND AT DRAYTON MANOR
International IP owner Hit Entertainment is a phenomenal success story. The company has become a world leader in creating and developing character-based brands for children’s entertainment. As part of their initiative to move their brands from TV into the world of themed attractions, they approached RMA and asked us to design and build the first Thomas Land outside of Japan in the grounds of the already established Drayton Manor theme park in Warwickshire.
We worked closely with Hit’s brand managers to recreate the magic that has entranced and entertained children for over 65 years. Our scheme for Thomas Land included seven major rides and spanned an area of some 3 acres.
With all the main characters having been created for the TV show, a lot of the 3D origination had already been done, but it was essential for us to stay absolutely faithful to the original designs in every detail. Working closely with the Drayton Manor team, RMA took the project from the initial master planning to the grand opening in 2006.
When Hit decided to make the TV show as a CGI animation rather than using the original stop frame method, Drayton Manor asked RMA to design and build a miniature Island of Sodor using the redundant models and sets. This now forms an attraction in its own right.
